Chocolates that Help Others

I was in Whole Foods the other day and picked up a little pack of chocolates on a whim.  These are called Wild Ophelia chocolates.  This particular pack is Cold Brew chocolate coffee bites with sea salt caramel latte.  They are non GMO, and this particular variety is crafted with High Brew Coffee (yea!)  The side of the package said Chocolate by the Women for the Women.  That got my interest, so I went on their site and learned that Wild Ophelia is a fair trade, non-GMO chocolate line that embodies the spirit and flavors of America.    Ten percent of their profits benefit the Wild Ophelia Accelerator Program, designed to support aspiring female food entrepreneurs. This program was created by Katrina Markoff to encourage and educate American high school and college girls who aspire to be food entreprepreneurs. Wild Ophelia will provide three girls with the funds and mentorship needed to start a business.  A portion of the sales from every chocolate sold is contributed to the Wild Ophelia Accelerator program, awarding three grants per year.  As the program grows, the number of grants awarded annually will increase.  Now this is what I call paying it forward!

Another chocolate deserving recognition is Endangered Species Chocolate.  Endangered Species is fairtrade, non-GMO project verified, gluten-free and vegan.  So, as you can see, there is something for everyone.  The back of each of their wrapper gives an entire lesson about a particular endangered species.  For example, mine was about the Eurasian Eagle-Owl.  It is said to be one of the largest owls in the world.  It is threatened by habitat degradation, human persecution and unchecked pesticide use.  To learn more about the Eurasian Eagle-Owl, go to www.owls.org.

Ten percent of the net profits from the sale of this chocolate bar are donated to the Rainforest Trust (www.RainforestTrust.org) and the Wildlife Conservation Network (www.WildNet.org) .

So, if you are looking for a way to indulge your chocolate craving while feeling good about it, here are two tasty alternatives to consider.  Bon Appetit!
