A Sweet Surprise

I have always wanted to keep bees, but one thing or another has always stood in my way, lack of money, space, energy, etc. And then I discovered a nonprofit that allowed me to “adopt my very own bee hive.

In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina made landfall in this section of New Orleans. This was the 5th deadliest hurricane and the costliest natural disaster in the history of the United States. This delicious Capstone Honey is produced locally in the Lower 9th Ward. Enjoy this heavenly raw honey while giving back to the Lower 9th community.

Capstone is a small non-profit that has taken previously blighted or vacant lots in the Lower Ninth Ward and developed them into productive gardens and orchards. Located in part of a food desert Capstone grows and provides food at no cost to those who need it. They also assist others in starting their own gardens or allowing the community to garden on their lots as space is available. *Fun fact, both Goods that Matter & Capstone are alumni of the Propeller Accelerator program – thanks Propeller! The Propeller Accelerator is a free program designed to help start up and growth stage entrepreneurs transform and enable their businesses to expand, and in doing so, better serve their communities.

Till the next time.
