Backyard Garden Update

Hey, check out our milkweed!  Well, we THINK that it is a milkweed.  At least that is what it is supposed to be.  I ordered 72 of these in the spring and planted them.  Something promptly gobbled up over half of them.  We had to spring into action, hanging CD’s and putting milk cartons around the remaining plants.  The remaining plants seemed to recover and are currently doing well,  But, we aren’t exactly sure that this is milkweed.  It doesn’t seem to match any of the pictures online.  I hope that it is a milkweed, or at the least, something that the butterflies and bees can feed on.  I will give an update when and if I can find out.  Or, if you know, please post a comment.

On a positive note, the bee balm and dill that we planted are doing well.  Again, when we planted the bee balm, something seemed to ravage it, so we rigged up things to discourage would-be destructors.  They look great, and hopefully they will provide the butterflies and bees with a food source.

The poor black-eyed susans are still struggling.  I don’t know what it is about our property, but all new plantings seem to go through a rough time at first.  I think they will pull through, but right now they are going through a bad time.

But the cone flowers have never looked better.  The bees have been joined by quite a few butterflies, and finches are now starting to feed on the centers.  Every time we leave the house, we have a proliferation of wildlife darting out from the flowers.

Well, I’m sorry if this post seems a little disconnected.  Right now I’m fighting a killer migraine, and I don’t think I’m going to win this one.  Oh well, better days ahead.

Have a wonderful day.
